Summer solstice and the Cancer season

On the 21st of June we celebrate the longest day of light in the Northern Hemisphere, it is called the Summer solstice. The opposite is happening on the Southern Hemisphere as they celebrate the Winter solstice and start looking forward to longer and longer periods of daylight. So no matter where you are on the planet, this is an important turning point in the year.

The summer solstice also announces the start of the Cancer season, when the Sun moves to Cancer. It is a cardinal sign which means it wants to initiate and shift things. The Cardinal quality also suggests that they can be assertive, but they rarely go straight for the target. They prefer some kind of sideways strategy.  Cancer is also a water sign, so it usually acts on and operates with emotions.

I find Cancer a rather controversial sign as it loves to initiate things but is also very receptive. This zodiac sign is subtle, sensitive and caring, yet canny and tenacious too. It has a vulnerable interior yet can wear a hard shell on the outside – just like its animal symbol.

The ruling planet of Cancer is the Moon, so Cancerians usually react strongly to the Lunar cycle and to the different Moon phases. Their energy level and emotional state can also wax and wane. Moon is the symbol of the mother in astrology, so Cancerians are keen to develop a deep sense of belonging and connections to others or to their roots. Family is very important for them and they are very fierce protectors of their loved ones. Emotional safety is what they are after, hence they are often sentimentally bound to their past, to their home(land). They find it very difficult to let things, people or feelings go.

The emotional nature of Cancer is so dominant, that it often take precedence over rational sense. This can lead to oversensitivity, rapid mood changes and hence at worst, they use moods and emotional manipulation to either preserve situations or to achieve what they want.

If their childhood was less than ideal, sometimes they reinvent their past or completely disconnect from it. They might display the negative characteristics of the opposite sign Capricorn, by being ruthless and inconsiderate to others while fighting to attain rank and position.

At best, Cancerians find genuine pleasure in taking care of their loved ones. Professionally they often choose caring and healing occupations (e.g. cook or nurse). As they are very intuitive and empathetic, they can predict the public mood and emotional climate of those around them.

People with strong Cancer emphasis in their chart are often very drawn to water, to live by the seaside or a lake.

Wherever we have Cancer in our chart, we approach that area of our life in a rather protective and defensive way. This is also the area where we long for safety and stability.
